I.C Engines basics & important names and description

  • Basic and important names and description about I.C Engines in simple way to understand are like about Bore, Stroke, T.D.C, B.D.C, Clearance volume, swept volume, compression ratio, piston speed.

  • Engine cylinder inside diameter is called bore

Stroke

  • Piston moves up and down in the engine cylinder
  • The maximum displacement of the piston can move is called stroke

Top Dead Centre (T.D.C)

  • When piston can moves maximum upside limit of the cylinder, the position of the piston is called Top Dead Centre
  • In case of horizontal cylinder, the position of the piston is called inner dead center

Bottom Dead Center (B.D.C)

  • When piston can moves maximum downside limit of the cylinder, the position of the piston is called Bottom Dead Centre
  • In case of horizontal cylinder, the position of the piston is called outer dead center

Clearance volume

  • When piston pace at Top Dead Centre, then the volume between the piston top to cylinder top is called clearance volume

Swept volume

  • The volume between top dead centre (T.D.C) to bottom dead centre (B.D.C) is called Swept volume
  • The piston can move the maximum displacement volume is called swept volume
  • Total volume = swept volume + clearance volume

Compression ratio

  • It is ratio of total cylinder volume to clearance volume
  • Compression ratio (r)
  • compression-ratio
  • Where, Vs = Swept volume
  • Vc = Clearance volume
  • In S.I engines the compression ratio are between 5:1 to 11:1
  • In C.I engines the compression ratio are between 12:1 to 24:1

Piston speed

  • The average speed of the piston is called piston speed
  • Piston speed = 2 LN
  • Where, L = Length of the stroke
  • N = Speed of the engine in r.p.m
